Purpose: This study aimed to clarify the relationships among the resilience, stress coping, and mental health of occupational therapists working in psychiatric hospitals. ◇Methods: From April to May 2017, a self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted on 276 occupational therapists working in psychiatric hospitals in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The questionnaire consisted of items on basic attributes, the Adolescent Resilience Scale for measuring resilience, a Coping Scale, and the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). Multiple regression analysis was then performed using each resilience subscale as an independent variable and each coping subscale as a dependent variable, with each coping subscale as an independent variable and GHQ-12 score as a dependent variable, and then with each resilience subscale as an independent variable and GHQ-12 score as a dependent variable. In addition, in all analyses, basic variables that showed a significant association with a dependent variable were input as adjustment variables. Results: In relation to resilience and coping, a significant association was observed between each resilience subscale and the “emotional-focus-type” of coping. In addition, significant associations were observed between both the “emotional-focus-type” of coping and the resilience subscales and GHQ-12 score. Conclusions: The results of the present study suggest that an educational support program aimed for improved resilience could be an important strategy for managing stress and maintaining good mental health among occupational therapists working in psychiatric hospitals. |
