Popis: | 本論ではまず戦後の日本での高等教育改革の一つの前提となる,当時のアメリカ合衆国での教養教育の特色の一端を論じたい.その要点は,20世紀前半のアメリカの教養教育は,主として人文学の立場から構成されていた,という点である.この論点を,できるだけ戦後の教育改革に実際に携った人物の意見を中心として,再構成してみたい.その上で,教養教育についてのアメリカ側からの提起を,日本側がどう受け止めたのかについて,多少とも触れたい.最後に,戦後教育改革において,ウォールター・イールズの果たし(得)た役割について,ジュニア・カレジと教養教育との関係に焦点をあて,論じたいと考える. The present essay relates the rebirth of humanism in twenty-century America and the reform of higher education in postwar Japan. Contrary to the assumed predominance of pragmatic educational philosophy in post-war educational reform in Japan, those American scholars with the background of hummanities prepared higher-education-reform plans on behalf of the US Education Mission to this country. These members derived from the revival of humanism as against the sway of monistic naturalism characteristic of the university movement in the United States and, as such, they shared the sense of affinity of Christianity and humanism. Thus, the proposed introduction of general education reflected emphasis upon humanities to be taught, hopefully, by those who had faith in the supernatural, vis-a-vis by materialists whose understanding of human beings would be prone to the promotion of communism in higher education. The higher education reform in postwar Japan was simultaneously humanistic as well as political, a complex to be extricated for a better understanding of conditions for successful programs of general and liberal education in this country. |
