The mathematical ability of first-year students was measured using a multiple-choice test of elementary mathematics during 2016-2021, and a comparison with a previous report during 2011-2015. The average percentage of correct answers in the mathematics basic confirmation test ranged between 68.4 and 79.5 %, with higher values from 2018 onwards. The distribution of the percentage of correct answers was not normally distributed, and was bimodal with peaks between 40-59 % and 70-89 % in 2016-2018, and unimodal with peaks between 70-100 % in 2019-2021. Each peak can be attributed to some extent to the type of entrance examination of the incoming students: 40-59 % were mainly interview-based and 70-100 % were mainly written-based. The average percentage of correct answers has been monotonically increasing since 2011, so it is expected that various factors other than the type of entrance examination are involved. |
