Popis: This paper discusses rhetorical expressions found in "Panther in the Basement" (1995), an autobiographical novel by Amos Oz, a distinguished, contemporary novelist of Israel. What has been shown is as follows: 1) Oz's rhetorical expressions, especially simile, metaphor and allegory, contribute greatly to the vivid description of characters, events and circumstances under which events take place. 2) Conspicuous in the novel is Oz's artistic handling of the Hebrew language with which he gives life even to most commonplace phenomena. Books, for instance, in the study of the main character's father's are ranked from the highest to the lowest according to the size and the space they occupy in the shelf. The leaflets, which are placed in an crowded way in the bottom of the shelf, are given the shabbiest description, and Oz's wording of the junk makes one suspect that the junk is meant to refer to some people who have long been treated unfairly in history. 3) A Hebrew word 'tris', which means 'shutter', 'blind' or 'slit', is used in three situations effectively, and plays a central role in the story.
