Objective : The present study aimed to clarify the characteristics of nursing faculty members in 2-year nursing diploma programs, to describe the gap between the current and ideal states of nursing faculty members, and to identify issues related to closing this gap. Methods : A postal survey comprising the Educational Needs Assessment Tool for Nursing Faculty (FENAT) and the Faculty Attribute Questionnaire was distributed to 721 nursing faculty members at all 120 2-year nursing diploma programs in Japan. Responses were obtained from 492 faculty members (collection rate, 68.2%) and statistically analyzed. Results : The mean overall FENAT score was 76.1 points (range, 34-109). Among the FENAT subscales, the highest scores were obtained for "II. Conducting research and giving the fruits of research back to the community". A total of 13 variables related to the ideal states of nursing faculty members were identified, including "membership in academic societies" and "nursing competence", the latter of which demonstrated the strongest correlation. Conclusion : The present findings identified six issues related to closing the gap between the current and ideal states of nursing faculty members, such as "enhancing teaching activities based on research implementation and results".
