The objective of this study was for nursery school teachers to shed light on the actual situation of children at nursery schools with “concerning eating styles”. We surveyed by questionnaire 220 nursery school teachers responsible for classes of 1- to 5-year-old children at 47 different private and public licensed nursery schools in B City of A Prefecture. Teachers identified 231 of 3,481 children (6.6%) as having “a concerning eating style” and children with a birth weight of less than 2,500 g accounted for a large proportion of these 231 children. When the children were compared for 21 “items related to a concerning eating style” according to their background, problems with “items related to a concerning eating style” were found to differ depending on age. Children with a birth weight of less than 2,500 g and born at fewer than 37 weeks’ gestation had a higher proportion of “items related to a concerning eating style,” our date suggested that low-birth-weight infants have potential problems with feeding. |
