This study examines the effect of Nonstandard Employment on youth suicide ideation. Incontemporary Japan, the rise in youth suicide rate and youth nonstandard employment populationis social problem. Previous studies (Hirano 2016) have shown that youth nonstandard employeehas more suicide ideation than regular employee has. Nonstandard employment have had seriousimpact on mental health in young people. But this study has missed important issues : (1) thereason to work in nonstandard employment, (2) Nonstandard Employment is defined as (a)working hours per week (part-time work), (b) employed with or without a definite contract term(fixed-term contracts), (c) status in employment (irregular staffs).Accordingly, we examine the effect of the reason to work in nonstandard employment andthree definition of nonstandard employment on youth suicide ideation by analyzing web surveydata. The analysis reveals that nonstandard employees on fixed-term contracts has more suicideideation than standard employees on indefinite contracts has. This result is confirmed bymultivariate analysis (binomial logistic regression analysis). But working hours per week, statusin employment, and the reason to work in nonstandard employment have little effect on suicideideation. These results imply that nonstandard employment on fixed-term contracts has impact onsuicide risk in young people. Nevertheless, this study is based on cross-sectional data. In orderto insist that nonstandard employment on fixed-term contracts increase suicide risk in youngpeople, further investigation (e.g. panel survey) is required. |
