It makes a comparison of policies toward Western religion and non-Western religion. Japan applied different methods toward each religion in order to achieve its colonial reign smoothly. This is the characteristic of religious policies by the government-general of Chosen in this period. The methods toward each religion, however, were clearly different, especially between the Korean-initiated religion and the missionary-centered religion. The policies toward Buddhism and Confucianism, which were initiated by Korean people, were so direct and straightforward that the regulating content and goals were clear and explicit. On the other hand, the policy toward Christianity, which was led by missionaries, was indirect and euphemistic. This is because the non-politicization was outwardly demanded on the principle of politico-religious separation even though the persistent pressure and oppression were behind the scene. Japan was under circumstances in which it could not help considering the relationship with the Western Powers, and therefore, was not able to ignore the interest of the missionaries. The method and detail of the Christian policy of the government-general of Chosen was considerably dissimilar to the policies toward Buddhism and Confucianism. 論文(Article) |
