Naming practices for the order of surname and given name vary by culture. As Japan became more westernized in the Meiji era, Japanese people came to use given name before surname, and the practice has become prevalent. In 2000, the Council on the National Language of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology published a report that recommends that the surname should appear first. However, it seems that many Japanese people still continue to use“given name-surname" order even in 2022.
