Examining factors of unwanted worrisome thoughts is important, and in recent years, researchers have focused on attention bias. Attention bias for general threat was reported as having a moderate effect size in a meta-analysis for anxious individuals. However, the content of worry differs depending on age or position, but not necessarily on a general threat. We investigated 15 studies that examined differences in attention bias for various stimuli between high and low worriers, using a random effects model of meta-analysis. Results indicated that the effect size of words was larger than that of pictures; moreover, the effect size of worry-related words was the largest among other words. We argued that use of worry-related words is reasonable for measuring attention bias for worry-related information. Finally, we discussed methodological consideration for studying attention bias in the clinical domain. |
