The purpose of this study is to examine how marital couples’ preferences for the number\ of children that they would like to have are shaped, and how these preferences change.\ While there are numerous quantitative studies on reproductive behavior, little qualitative\ research has been conducted on this subject. In this study, interviews were conducted on\ seven married couples in their twenties and thirties.\ Findings indicate that the number of siblings that the couple has and the number of\ children that their friends have, have shaped their preferences regarding the number of\ children they would want to have; couples change these preferences while attempting\ to manage physiological strain and a shortage of resources associated with child birth.\ Because of different amounts of strain and the varying resource needed based on gender\ role differences between husbands and wives, two types of strategies exist: for families and for individuals. However, it is revealed that a high evaluation of siblinghood maintains the desire for subsequent birth. |
