Most of the housing styles of the contemporary farm houses in Kokawa are the peculiar styles named Shikoro. Among them, Hon-Shikoro style houses are almost always equipped with the Do-tenjo (=a kind of ceiling made of clay). The explanation of the dominance of these styles from the architectural planning of view is that the styles look like the traditional houses of the high class and give the psychosocial satisfaction. The purpose of the present paper is the consideration on the usefulness of the Do-tenjo from not a psychological but a thermal environmental point of view. The results of the preliminary investigation show that the Do-tenjo has the environmental rationality fundamentally. Therefore, these is the aspect that the Do-tenjo, aimed at the environmental control, has created the peculiar housing style nemed Hon-Shikoro. There are, however, several points to be studied to make the environmental control more effective. |
