This paper intends to shed light on how students' response towards social affairs have been reflected in their reading of “Gan-kairo no Ashita" (Tomorrow for Cancer Ward, non-literary text) by investigating their reading reports from 1989 through 1995. Those students examined are nursing trainees mainly in the twenties. Each year nursing college students read one chapter of “Gan-kairo no Ashita" and write reading assignments. Considerations are basically given to the apparent changes of their response on the basis of seven-year continuous analysis of their reading evidence. Those seven years public recognition towards nursing profession was radically remodified and as a result the Nursing Day was founded and four-year nursing college was established. This will hopefully show that social attitudes regarding medical status, such as informed consent, terminal care, shortage of nurses and cares in the aging society, could highly reflected onto students' reading. |
