Popis: Lilacillin® (SE-PC) was administered in a dose of 2.0 gm by intravenous one shot method two times daily for the purpose of prevention of postoperative infection in 21 cases of upper urinary tract lithiasis and the following results were obtained: 1) The expected clinical result was obtained in 14 out of 21 cases (66.7 per cent). 2) Persistence of urinary tract infection existing since before surgery or development of new infection was observed in seven out of 21 cases (33.3 per cent) and in six out of these seven cases, a catheter was retained in the urethra. 3) Postoperative infection occurred in six out of eight cases (75 per cent) in whom a catheter was retained in the urethra. 4) Concerning side effects, diarrhea occurred in one case, but detrimental effects on renal function and liver function were not observed in any case. 5) Excretion of the drug was studied in two cases. It was excreted rapidly and the duration of urinary effective levels was satisfactory. Lilacillin was very effective for prevention of postoperative infections except for the cases in whom a catheter was retained in the urethra after surgery. How to cope with the cases with a retained catheter is a problem for the future.
