Today 's science education is required to improve instruction for thinking using models. We designed a teaching method to teach “thought by modeling” in which students consider models in association with natural phenomena and think new models by transforming current model. The teaching method consists of six phases: 1) extraction of elements, 2) correspondence, 3) adaptation, 4)comparison, 5) evaluation / modification, and 6) utilization. As the result of 22 hours lessons of the unit "Earth and Space" at the third grade of junior high school, students in the experimental group (N = 201) performed statistically higher in solving problems by using the thought by modeling, than the students of the control group (N = 182) who have not taught by the though by modeling after 21 hours standard type lessons. The new teaching method showed an effectiveness for empowering students’ thought by modeling. |
