S.KINSUI&Y.TAKUBO(1990,1992)treat all the usages of Japanese demonstratives with the framework of "MentalSpace". Although their approach is very comprehensive, endophoric usages are important exceptions to the approach: they cannot be treated appropriately by the framework. The main reason for this is that the usages mostly concerns with text formation and therefore must be treated within a framework for the formation: cohesion. In this article, Some of the differences between KONO and SONO are treated by reference to cohesion. Although some of them are text-oriented and others are lexicon-based, most of them can only be treated within the framework of cohesion not within that of Mental Space. |
