The aim of this study was to consider the question of whether the Hentai Kanbun (変体漢文) can be reconstructed to a specific Japanese sentence or not. Many researchers argue this question in terms of a linguistic features of Hentai Kanbun, but I’m examined this question from a sociolinguistic point of view. Only one way of how to read can be determined when a sentence of a Hentai Kanbun is read aloud, but it can’t when it’s read silently. I illustrated that character “読” means reading aloud and character “見” means reading silently, which previous researches indicated in Kana text, in Hentai Kanbun in the Heian and Insei period with examples of collation (読合). Also, I illustrated that Hentai Kanbun can be read aloud with examples of Gebumi (解文) and Kanmon (勘文). However, the texts having the actual reconstructed Japanese sentence or mentioning about the reconstruction are rare. The texts about character “後” in Fuda ”札” in Yubahajime/Ibahajime (弓場始・射場始) represent that aristocrats could not completely reconstruct the intended Japanese sentence from Kanji. Furthermore, the comparison Kotogaki (事書) and Katamekotoba (結詞) in Sadamebumi (定文) of Fukandendensou (不堪佃田奏) indicates that writers must use not only Kanji but also Kana in Hentai Kanbun when they want to specify the intended Japanese sentence. In addition, even though there are texts what indicating errors in utterance and form of ritual, I could not find texts indicating errors in how to read aloud Hentai Kanbun. This means that aristocrats did not expect others to reconstruct a specific Japanese sentence from Hentai Kanbun. I concluded that the Hentai Kanbun cannot completely be reconstructed to a specific Japanese sentence in terms of sociolinguistics. Conversely, writers mixed Kana with Hentai Kanbun when they want readers to reconstruct the intended Japanese sentence. |
