This study examined the forms of backchannel expressions in LINE chat conversations between native and non-native Japanese speakers in Japanese?Korean contact situations. Results revealed that conceptual expressions (others) were observed more frequently in native rather than non-native speakers of Japanese, whereas non-conceptual expressions were observed more frequently in non-native rather than native speakers. The characteristics of kyowa (cooperative conversation) indicating active involvement were revealed in the backchannels of Japanese native speakers; however, the backchannels of non-native speakers evinced the characteristics of taiwa (dialogue), in which the listener does not interfere with the speaker’s utterance. Further, many conceptual expressions (so-type) were found in both native and non-native speakers of Japanese. Phenomena similar to tendencies noted in spoken conversations in contact situations were identified in Japanese?Korean LINE chat conversations: the influence of native conversational styles and adjustments made between native and non-native Japanese speakers to emphasize the comprehensibility of the discourse. |
