…… Osaka has been called a commerce city, and its trade has nurtured the development of the manufacturing sector in the background. Osaka has therefore been not just a commerce city or a manufacturing city. I conducted a study to concretely understand what the city has been like in the context of the wholesale business and manufacturing. I narrowed the focus of this essay to woolen products and menswear, and selected department stores as they were significantly involved in the production of menswear. Department stores, as seen in Mitsukoshi and Daimaru, had been achieving high standards in manufacturing and in their products by directly adopting techniques from the West. On the other hand, menswear wholesalers had been expanding their business by depending on garment subcontractors for the actual manufacturing. The first turning point after WWII occurred in the early 1960s when these wholesalers set up their own factories to respond to the demand for mass produced goods and became manufacturers themselves. Their own factories were first set up within the Osaka Prefecture, and they then exbanded to areas outside the prefecture. Subsequently, in the 1990s, these factories were set up in China through joint ventures. The series of these factory relocations depended on the availability of cheap and abundant labor, and the biggest challenge they faced was when they started working with the Chinese garment industry. If they dealt with one of their concerns and lowered their prices like others, it would go against their existing business model. However, if they did not respond to the situation, they would not remain competitive and face failure. The impact on department stores and menswear manufacturers that had depended on the premium segment was major. Drastic changes took place in the 2000s through major company reorganizations, either as corporate revitalization or business integration. |
