This thesis explores new aspects of the vanadates, and raise many themes of discussion. Despite the fact that systems containing partially filled t2g have in general received less attention than their eg counterparts, the work presented here demonstrates that their physical properties can be just as rich. This thesis explores phenomena in the RVO3 perovskites that include orbital, magnetic and charge ordering, electronic phase separation, metal- to-insulator transitions of different mechanisms, and magnetoresistance. The work presented here uses a wide range of experimental probes to provide further insight into the electronic properties of RVO3 systems and transition metal oxides with partially filled t2g levels in general. |
