The scientific article describes the reclamation and settlement history of Blijham as part of the Landscape Biography Westerwolde. Suppositions about the agricultural reclamation of peat and clay and the settlement origin are reviewed. The land reclamation with dykes, the repeated flooding and the fight against waterlogging left markings and traces in landscape patterns. Most of these patterns and markings were erased during the agricultural land development period in the second half of the 20th century. For example, the centuries-old elongated land parcels were converted into large modern block parcels, which are similar to other modern agricultural land elsewhere. A few traces of the historical landscape remain visible to the connoisseur. The landscape biography serves as inspiration for the future spatial planning and marketing of the region. |
