The issue of the cultural-historical relativity of translation is considered in this article. The author analyses the positions of the participants of modern discussions on problems of translation in the context of the history of discussion of translation strategies in Russia (1930-1950-ies) and grounds the conclusion, that depending on cultural-historical goals, the choice of a translation strategy is being made every time anew. There is no sense in theoretical debates, if they do not consider a certain translation and the question of which particular function it fulfils in a certain culture. Therefore this is the only methodologically significant and substantive conclusion, which can be made of the thesis of incommensurability of cultures and impossibility of the absolute translation. |
