The low-temperature polarized absorption spectra of the ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{2+}$ ion in the orthorhombic [(${\mathrm{CH}}_{3}$${)}_{3}$NH]${\mathrm{MnCl}}_{3}$\ensuremath{\cdot}${2\mathrm{H}}_{2}$O single crystal have been reported at different temperatures. The spectra reveal ${C}_{i}$ site symmetry for the transition center. Metal-pair interaction is invoked to rationalize the polarization characteristics of absorption bands. This interaction produces some remnants of ${C}_{2h}$ selection rules. The absorption bands are observed either as magnon sidebands or magnon-phonon sidebands. The influence of the molecular field at the lowest temperature is proposed to be responsible for splitting some of the absorption lines. |
