Summary In summary, the present study of simultaneous electrical and mechanical activity in myasthenia gravis patients and in partially curarized normal subjects indicates that tension changes at slow (3/sec.) and moderate (30/sec.) stimulation rates are more accurate indices to muscle weakness than changes in the action potential. In addition, the results in these two groups of subjects suggest that the weakness may, at least in part, be due to changes in the contractile ability of the muscle apart from any change in neuromuscular transmission. Neostigmine apparently is capable of restoring the contractile ability of muscle at a time when no alteration in neuromuscular transmission can be observed. |
