Popis: | The word tradition includes the meaning of transmission of ideas, skills and customs from one generation to the other. It incorporates expressions of cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible. Tradition links the past with the present and the future. Following a description of the traditional rural life in Cyprus, the beliefs and values of its people, the paper refers to the customs and rites which have survived to this day, either in their original form or modified and/ or simplified. It then refers to the various efforts and measures taken for their revitalization. Customs and rites remain alive as long as their bearers feel them as a valuable part of their identity. In the last few decades, the need for the preservation and transmission of tradition developed as a reaction to globalization ; particularly in Cyprus it was also a resistance to the destruction of the cultural heritage of the island as a result of the Turkish invasion in 1974. Tradition is the bearer of cultural identity and its values can enrich modern life and make it more human. Rizopoulou-Egoumenidou Euphrosyne.
