Tuberculosis in refugees

Popis: Croatia has given shelter to more than half million displaced persons and refugees from Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Klenovnik has one of the specialised hospitals that provides treatment for pulmonary diseases and tuberculosis for adults from different parts of Croatia. We have studied the records for all patients treated in this hospital during 1992. In 1992 there were 2774 admissions. 271 (9, 8%) were refugees or displaced persons, 189 from occupied parts of Croatia and 82 from Bosnia-Herzegovina ; the male- to-female ratio was 2-to-1 and the average age was 59 years. 125 (46, 1%) of the refugees and displaced persons had a discharge diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis, the proportion of men (50, 3%) being higher than that for women (38, 8%). The figure for the other 2503 patients admitted to Klenovnik Hospital in 1992 was only 21, 3%.
