Popis: | The design and evaluation of an automated screening system in general neurology, ASSIGN, is described. ASSIGN was constructed for use in the OPD of a large city hospital but is applicable to different clinical environments. The system uses historical data obtained in interview by a paraprofessional. Our study indicates that ASSIGN will identify about half of those patients who do not require further neurological evaluation, reduce the amount of time required to examine those patients who are referred for further neurological evaluation and expedite the acquisition of appropriate laboratory studies. The error rate for patients discharged by ASSIGN is not more than 10 per cent and the number of serious medical problems in this group is believed to be small enough to justify its use in a routine, non-parallel, operation. |
