Australian Indigenous leaders push back on being singled out as ‘leaders’ demonstrating central tensions at play in Indigenous leadership. This chapter explores the ramifications of how the ‘leader’ identity complicates the work of Indigenous leadership which more saliently operates from the connected place of family and community. Highlighting a study of twenty Australian Indigenous women, we discuss the practicality and cultural responsibility central to Indigenous leadership. The wisdom in Australian Indigenous leadership connects the building of cultural strength through family and community work with the collective striving for better conditions and outcomes for all Indigenous peoples. |
