Popis: Aims and Background: Tumour staging according to the classification of malignant tumours (TNM) is widely used and is still considered an important determinant of prognosis. However, one of the biggest challenges for treatment of breast cancer is the mapping of tumour heterogeneity characteristic of these carcinomas. The aim of this study was to analyse the disease-free survival and overall survival in patients with breast cancer subtype luminal A, stratified according to the TNM classification. Methods and study design Data were collected from 363 medical records belonging to a period from 01/01/2001 to 31/05/2006. Of those, 136 were classified as immunohistochemical subtype luminal A, which formed the population analysed. The main objective was the analysis of disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients with luminal A breast cancer, stratified according to the TNM classification. Results Of the 253 patients undergoing immunohistochemical classification were found 53% (136 cases) of the luminal A. The number of patients with luminal A breast cancer (136) who underwent chemotherapy followed by endocrine therapy compared to patients who underwent hormone therapy alone, subdivided by DFS and OS according to TNM or histological grades is not statistically significant according to our results Conclusion According to our sample, there is no significant difference in survival of patients who underwent chemotherapy followed by HT or HT only isolated, we suggest that the IHC luminal A subtype confers good prognosis independent of other factors, including TNM staging. This study conducted an analysis of women who underwent chemotherapy and / or HT and found no statistical differences in survival between these patients, suggesting that the benefit rendered from chemotherapy, if existent, might be very small.
