Application of Flow Reactors to Very Low Pressures by Using CH3+O(3P) as a Test Reaction

Popis: The kinetics of the reaction of methyl radicals with O( 3 P) atoms has been investigated at 300 K, 0.25-1.00 mbar, to demonstrate that the low-pressure flow-reactor technique may be successfully operated in this regime where flow conditions are not ideal. The O and CH 3 were generated by the microwave discharge of a highly diluted He/O 2 mixture and by the fast reaction CH 4 +F→CH 3 +HF. Reactant concentrations were selected so that [O]/[CH 3 ] 0 > 10 to approximate pseudo-first-order conditions. CH 3 time-decay profiles yielded a mean value for k (CH 3 +O→product) = (1.3±0.2)×10 −10 cm 3 molecule −1 s −1 , independent of pressure. Application of the diffusion and pressure corrections to the raw data is discussed, and evidence presented that the normal correction formulae remain valid even under extreme flow complications.
