Contagious ovine digital dermatitis (CODD) is a cause of severe welfare compromise in affected sheep and can cause major problems on some farms. The specific aetiology is still unknown but Treponema spp. are considered as the most likely infectious agents necessary for disease. Recent evidence has shown strong links between footrot and CODD and a holistic approach to treatment and control is likely to be necessary in order to achieve control on affected farms. Together with this, strict biosecurity practices are required including the examination of all feet of all new entrants to a flock with the aim of preventing the introduction of CODD to unaffected flocks. |
