Factitious disorder is an uncommon psychiatric illness, but its incidence is difficult to ascertain because of the surreptitious nature of the condition. A review of the literature using MEDLINE (1966–1999) revealed 74 articles describing patients with factitious disorder who have simulated a huge array of illnesses. Many articles were written about factitious skin disorders, infections, hypoglycemia, and thyrotoxicosis. However, we were unable to find a case of factitious hypertension caused by ingestion of pseudoephedrine. Thus, to our knowledge, we report on the first case of factitious hypertension caused by the use of pseudoephedrine.
