Popis: A system using SD units rather than original measurement values for reporting clinical laboratory data is presented. The SD unit directly depicts the degree of normality or abnormality of a value because it expresses the deviation of an individual value from the mean of the normal population. It standardizes reporting by establishing a single scale for all tests and methods, provides an intervariable unit that is easily adapted to laboratory changes in methodology without necessitating a change in the numerical reporting system, and allows immediate comparison of direction and magnitude of variation for any number of constituents simultaneously. The clinical usefulness of this system is illustrated by individual patient reporting, comparing results obtained in different laboratories by different methods, and demonstrating its application in studies of correlative pathophysiology.
