Popis: | Background: Appendicitis is the most common operative emergency in children. As a result of accumulating evidence from randomized trials, observational studies, database work, and meta-analyses, the management of appendicitis in children has been shifting the past 15 years with many new debates emerging. In this article, we review our current management schemes. Methods: We reviewed the current and critical literature relevant to the rationale for our current management. Results: Clinical pathways appear to reduce variation and cost while improving the ability to diagnose and treat the disease. Minimally invasive approaches can be used to treat all forms of appendicitis. Conclusions: The future role of non-operative management deserves ongoing exploration. Refining diagnostic treatment algorithms and enhancing antibiotic stewardship are important moving forward. |
