Popis: | Article II of the Constitution of the Association for Academic Surgery [l] states that, “The objective of this Association shall be to stimulate young surgeons to pursue careers in academic surgery. . . .” A possible corollary to this objective would be the encouragement of members of the Association to seek a career culminating in Chairman of a Department of Surgery. An often-heard figure with regard to the incidence of vacant Chairs within Departments of Surgery in the United States and Canada approaches 25%. Likewise, one often hears that the half-life of Chairmen of Departments of Surgery, like their counterparts, the Deans of Medical Schools, within these two countries, is measured in months rather than in years. While this enigma challenges investigation, the Committee On Issues felt the need to explore first the role of the Chairman of a Department of Surgery prior to initiating an investigation of his apparent neonatal mortality.
