Popis: SummaryFemale mice were injected intraperitoneally with polonium-210 and the localization in ovary and uterus and effects on oocyte survival were studied. Radioautographic studies showed that polonium-210 was localized primarily in the follicle cells of the ovary, whereas it was distributed diffusely through the myometrium of the uterus. Significant killing of primary oocytes occurred after exposure to as little as one picocurie of 210Po per gram body-weight, and larger amounts of polonium killed almost all the oocytes and grossly distorted the architecture of the ovary. The pathological changes seen were typical of those visible after exposure to radiation, but dose estimates suggest that in some cases the RBE for 210Po alpha-particles may be as high as 50 or more compared with 60Co gamma-rays. The kinetics of killing were those ascribed to ‘single-hit’ killing. The data fit a dose-effect plot without a threshold.
