Popis: The article presents the results of an exploratory study designed to understand how Chilean teachers perceive their role and value to society. A survey was designed with 21 Likert-type items, distributed into two scales for analysis; an internal one, related to the teacher’s role and his or her contribution to the educational community, and an external one, related to the impact their professional work as teachers has on society. The internal consistency of the instrument was evaluated with Cronbach’s alpha. In all, 224 teachers from 15 regions in Chile took part in the study during 2015. They represented diferent areas of knowledge and diferent educational contexts. The results indicate there is a positive perception in the internal dimension linked to the teacher’s personal satisfaction and the disciplinary training the teaching staff receives. However, in the external dimension, it was evident that teachers’ perception of the State’s recognition and trust in their work is negative. This aspect contrasts with the high degree of appreciation they perceive from their students and the surrounding community.
