Publisher Summary Bacterial nomenclature has been loose and unsystematic; the terms in common use do not have the significance that applies to terminology in other branches of biology. One of the reasons for this unsatisfactory state is that the identification of certain organisms might be a matter of considerable difficulty, and many criteria must be fulfilled before their identity can be definitely established. Many designations were used by different workers in the early days of bacteriology to indicate the same organism. One of the important tasks confronting the bacteriologists was the clearing up of this chaotic state and the establishment of a uniform nomenclature; with this aim, an international committee had been appointed. Progress would be slow, because it is probable that medical bacteriologists would continue to use such time-honored but loose descriptive terms as the tubercle bacillus, diphtheria bacillus, and gonococcus, in preference to names of more taxonomic significance. |
