N A PROVENCAL vida or "biography"' of the troubadour Gui d'Uisel, there appears the statement that Gui's brother Peire "descanted" the works of his brothers and his cousin. We might infer from this that descant was employed in the performance of troubadour melodies; indeed, just such an inference has been drawn by several scholars, both philologists and musicologists, who also display a curious interdependence in their interpretation of the passage in question.
