Popis: | In 1945 the A.A. Grclpevine (1) published a 36-item questionnaire for alcoholics dealing with their drinking history and symptoms of alcoholism? Responses from 98 men indicated the approximate age at onset of each symptom. From a detailed analysis of the responses Jellinek depicted the stages of alcoholism for men (2). Later, he validated these findings with a sample of 2000 male alcoholic patients (3). The A.A. Grapevine questionnaire brought 15 responses from women. Jellinek excluded these from his analysis because they differed greatly from the men's responses, and there were too few for separate treatment. In the past 30 years the symptoms and stages of alcoholism as established by Jellinek have been used for identifying alcoholism, in training alcoholism therapists, in treating alcoholics, and in research, without regard to the sex differences indicated by Jellinek's findings. The present study sought to establish symptoms of alcoholism in women and if possible to arrange them into stages replicating Jellinek's, and eventually to develop a questionnaire for the early identification of alcoholism in women. |
