Popis: | Summary Some factors associated with the radiographic progression of progressive massive fibrosis have been investigated by a follow-up study of the 879 cases of P.M.F. seen in 1950/1951. As mortality is very probably associated with progression, the detailed study has been limited to those cases in which the initial radiographic area was less than 20 sq. cm. These is evidence that mortality in this group over this period is little, if at all, above the expected rate. Two indices of progression have been studied—a simple percentage, and the ‘average increase in area’. Two factors were found to be significantly associated with progression—age, and initial radiographic area. Other evidence suggested that the background category of simple pneumoconiosis might also be important. These findings are discussed in relation to the problem of advising miners when to avoid further dust exposure. |
