Popis: The role of the socio-psychological concept of status in medical specialty choice decisions is examined. A total of 350 medical students responded to a questionnaire which asked them to rank six specialty areas according to the amount of status each held (1) within the medical profession and (2) outside medicine, among the general public. Significant differences were found between the two sets of rankings. These differences were interpreted as providing a possible explanation for the failure of previous investigations to show consistent relationships between perceived status and specialty choice decisions. The possibility of assigning some specialty status considerations to a previously suggested interaction pattern category of variables impacting specialty choice is examined. Finally, possible sex differences in the extent to which perceived status within medicine effects specialty choice are identified.
