Ambient oxidant concentrations have been monitored at Toronto, Canada since 1970. During the first 2 years of the survey, more than 100 hourly concentrations in excess of 10 pphm were observed. In the summer months, high oxidant concentration levels appeared to result from photochemical reactions since they were accompanied by the daily fluctuations of primary and secondary pollutants characteristic of photochemical activity. Simultaneous analysis of the oxidant monitoring data and continuous records of meteorological parameters showed that high oxidant concentrations occurred on days of high temperatures, long solar irradiation periods and sourtherly winds. The analysis indicated that the oxidant precursors may have originated from sources to the south of Toronto. |
