Data packets generation at machine-type devices (MTDs) of a cellular network may be correlated, due to the external events triggering the generation, and their immediate transmission on the uplink of a cellular system leads to collisions. Moreover, an expiration time for packets can be set to ensure data freshness. We propose a slotted adaptive coordinated random access protocol: when a packet is generated at an MTD, a slot in the next frame is selected for transmission at random and with a given statistics. Upon collision, the process is repeated, until the packet either is received or expires (outage event). We optimize the slot selection statistics, in order to minimize the outage probability, by modelling the transmissions with a Markov chain and solving a polynomial optimization problem. |
