Reproducibility is a key factor for open science, andresults must become reusable by conforming theFAIR principles. This is specifically applicable to research software. However, highly specialised research software is difficult to discover through web search engines. Hence, in the Helmholtz-Community together with European partners, we are developing a concept that will helpscientists both to increase outreach of software they developed, as well as in finding research software relevant to their research field. The foundation for this approach is laid by the Research Software Directory (RSD), first developed at the netherlands eScience center. A Helmholtz wide cloud instance of the RSD is planned, where researchers and research software engineers will be able to add their software as a self-service. The software entries inside the RSD will be indexed using standardised metadata, in order to assign specific research areas and make the software products easily discoverable for stakeholders. Furthermore, the RSD will be used to provide further services around the research software development process. Such services will be license consultation for the software engineers, or forwarding of metadata for DOI minting processes. Once added to the RSD, metrics will be automatically harvested, that will allow stakeholders to assess the relevance of the software projects with respect to their research interests. Particularly successful projects are promoted as a Software Spotlight on dedicated webpages (HIFIS.net). |
