Popis: | Nonspecific stimulation of the immune system in mice and its effects on Plasmodium yoelii and Plasmodium vinckei infections were studied using the agents: Corynebacterium parvum, Concanavalin-A, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a polymer of adenine and uridine units [poly(A:U)], and diethylstilbestrol (DES). C. parvum proved to be the best stimulant against both P. yoelii and P. vinckei. Poly(A:U) on the other hand had no or little effect on either parasite. Results obtained from DES-treated mice suggested that the reticuloendothelial system may differentially handle parasites inhabiting the mature red blood cells in contrast to those within the reticulocytes. |
