Popis: At previous meetings of the Eastern Section of the Seismological Society of America, it has been the custom for the Chairman to make a general report of recent progress in seismology. However, Captain Heck, who is much better qualified than I to do this, will give a review of seismology in the United States, and I expect to have something to say on a particular subject later. This leaves me free at this time to follow my fancy, but I wish to mention a few items of progress and look somewhat into the future. In doing so, I trust that I shall not duplicate to any considerable extent what others may have to say later.
