Popis: 1. 1. A total of 176 young rats, depleted of vitamin A under the conditions of the vitamin A bipassay, were fed β-carotene for 4 weeks in amounts of 6.3 and 12.6 μg. weekly, either alone or accompanied by 63, 126, or 252 μg. lutein. Other groups were given either no supplement, or 63, and 126 μg. lutein. Weight gains were measured for the animals which received carotene, and survival times for the negative controls and those receiving lutein alone. 2. 2. Lutein was without effect upon the utilization of carotene for growth, in any of the combinations employed. 3. 3. These observations are in contrast to the data reported by other investigators who have found that xanthophyll decreased the storage of carotene in the vitamin A-depleted rat. 4. 4. The results of these studies indicate that the difference between the green and yellow vegetables in availability of carotene content is not explicable on the basis of the xanthophylls which are present in large amounts in the green leaves, but almost wholly lacking in the yellow vegetables.
