Nursing has come a long way in Australia in the past 160 years when, in 1839, five Sisters of Charity arrived in Sydney to work in the Female Factory at Parramatta. Since then there have been many milestones, as the profession has grown and changed along with the country. Australian nurses have served in theatres of war, have overcome the tyranny of distance by working and caring for those in isolated areas, and now are moving into the new millennium as a highly professional and educated group. Dr Bob Bessant looks at the beginnings of nursing and the following milestones. |
