This kind of jubilee prompts reflection and we four current editors of the journal would like to take this opportunity to look back over its history a little, to consider how it has developed during its first quarter-century.ELL's founding editors (Bas Aarts, David Denison and Richard Hogg) published an editors’ note in the first issue, back in 1997, setting out the plans for the journal.
